Joseph D. "Pete" Dennis

Joseph “Pete” Delmos Dennis, Sr., 67, of Cheat Lake, passed from this life into God’s Eternal Heaven on Monday, February 21, 2011, at 9:00 a.m., at home with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. Born May 22, 1943 at home in Gans, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry “Bob” and Eliza McFadden Dennis. He attended the Gans Elementary and Point Marion High Schools. Pete received his love of football by playing for the Gans Tigers, sponsored by Mac Burchinal. His passion was following the WVU Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He worked at Risher and Company in Cleveland, Ohio. After returning to Morgantown, he worked at Sabraton Elementary School. He retired in 2003 from the WVU Coliseum after 31 years of service, where he was the senior custodian. He was affectionately known there as “Kenny Rogers”, and met many great people during that time. Pete was an avid hunter and fisherman, which he spent many hours talking about those times with family and friends. He also loved the numerous hours he spent with his brother, Don. Pete enjoyed frequently meeting with Bob Ridgway, Bob Lenhart, and Eldon Fowler for coffee, and he looked forward to those visits. In the afternoons and evenings, he and his wife Vickie enjoyed watching the old western movies on TV. Pete and Vickie were married on June 25, 1966 at the Calvary United Methodist Church. He received Christ as his Savior there on July 15, 2008. On Sept. 7, 2008, he was baptized by Pastor Julia Morrison, and became a member of that church. Surviving is his loving wife of 44 years, Victoria “Vickie” Pugh Dennis; a son, Joseph “Joe” Delmos Dennis, Jr. and wife Jodi; one granddaughter, Rachel Alexandra, all of Morgantown; a brother, Donald Dennis and wife Joyce of Gans; two sisters and their husbands, Shirley and Ralph Beatty and Wilma and Sam Phillips, all of Cheat Lake; a special cousin, Harry Dennis of Uniontown, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Danny Pugh of Cheat Lake; four sisters-in-law, Ninfa Dennis of Wickliffe, Ohio, Patty Wade Dennis of Eastlake, Ohio, Barbara Pugh and Linda Kennison and husband Don, all of Cheat Lake; two aunts, Anna Belle Martin and Jane Ridgway and husband Robert; his little “buddee” Jacob Kennison, all of Cheat Lake, and by many nieces, nephews, and other family members. Pete was preceded in death by brothers, Hank and Gib Dennis; uncle Lloyd Martin; and cousins Richard Hershman and Harry McDowell, Sr. Friends will be received in the Pierpont Church of the Nazarene, Cheat Lake, on Friday from 3 – 9 p.m., and Saturday from noon until 1:00 p.m., the hour of service, with Pastors Michael Rowe and Timothy Bess officiating. Interment follows in Zion Cemetery, Cheat Lake. Arrangements are in the care of the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, Pa. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Charles Beall, nurse Jean, Steve Gnegy, P.A.-C, Dr. Mark Johnson, and the oncology staff of the Mon General Hospital.
