It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James W Saunders, Jr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. James departed from this world on April 20th, 2024, at the age of 82 surrounded by his loving family. James, lovingly known as Jim; a pillar of love and strength, left our lives leaving behind a legacy woven with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Jim was one of six children, each a testament to the bonds of family and the power of love. He is survived by his sister, Freda Dunn of West Virginia, and Ron and Jeanie Saunders of Tennessee, who will forever hold his memory dear. Jim shared nearly six decades of marriage with his devoted wife, Rosemarie. Their bond was a testament to love's enduring power, weathering life's storms and celebrating its joys together. They were a shining example of commitment and companionship, and their love continues to inspire all who knew them. Among Jim's greatest joys was sharing the stage with his beloved wife, Rockin' Rosie, where together they serenaded audiences with their voices during karaoke nights. Their performances illuminated their profound love for each other, shining brightly with every note sung. A scholar and an innovator, Jim's professional achievements were vast and distinguished. Armed with a Ph.D. in engineering, he bestowed his wisdom upon countless students as a professor at West Virginia University. Beyond academia, Jim's expertise left a deep-rooted mark on the field of civil engineering. He worked for a private company until retirement where his dedication and innovative spirit influenced all who worked alongside him. As a father to his surviving nine children, Russel and Liway Saunders of Virginia, Faith Saunders Minor of Pennsylvania, James W. Saunders III of Maryland, Mark and Julie Saunders of Alaska, Joseph and Debbie Saunders, Eric and Sheryl Saunders of West Virginia, Timothy and Amy Saunders of Pennsylvania, Jonathan and Beth Saunders and Bridget Saunders of West Virginia. He cherished each moment spent with his children, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and above all, love for the family. His pride knew no bounds as he watched them grow into the remarkable individuals they are today. Jim's passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a devoted lifetime member of the Independent Hunting Club located in the backwaters of Cheat Lake and New Creek Mountain Sportsman’s Club in Grant Co. WV. These shared adventures with his family created lifelong memories and strengthened the bonds that held them together. He also possessed a rare talent for fixing anything that crossed his path, a skill that earned him admiration and respect from all who knew him. In addition to his roles as brother, husband, father, and engineer, Jim was a cherished grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, whose love and guidance will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though Jim may no longer walk among us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. May his soul find eternal peace knowing he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. Rest in peace, dear Jim, knowing your legacy of love will continue to shine brightly through all those whose lives you touched. Friends will be received in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, PA, on Friday, April 26th, from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm, and again Saturday, April 27th: 9:30 am - 10:30 am, when Prayers of Transfer will be said, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Hubert’s R.C. Church Point Marion. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion. After the interment, a celebration of Jim's life will be held at the American Legion in Point Marion, PA. Together, let us cherish the moments shared and commemorate the legacy left behind by our beloved Jim. Your presence and support during this time are deeply appreciated."
