Helen T. Pekar

December 20, 1927 - September 20, 2016

Helen T. Pekar, a longtime resident of Bobtown, Pa., passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016. Born Dec. 20, 1927 in Poland Mines, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Leon and Catherine (Celuh) Tarasuk. A 1944 graduate of Mapletown High School, she was a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Masontown. Surviving are her two children and their spouses, Catherine Chabanik (William) of Smithfield, and Nick Pekar (Denise) of Glade Springs, Virginia; five grandchildren, Elaine (Brian), Victoria (Samuel) Nicole, Steven and Sharon; one step-granddaughter, Madison; eight great-grandchildren, Adam, Max, Samuel, Riley, Jasmine, Anastasia, Arabella, and Jupiter; and two sisters, Sophia Wallace of Masontown and Olga Tarasuk of Dilliner. Her husband, Steve J. Pekar, died on Feb. 23, 2011. Also deceased are brothers, Wassil, Fred, Nick, Leon, and John in infancy; and sisters, Mary and Anna. Friends will be received in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, on Saturday from 4 – 8 PM, and Sunday from 1 – 2 PM, the hour of the Funeral Service, with the Very Rev. Vitaly Dudkin officiating. Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion. Panachida Service will be held Saturday at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church or Amedisys Hospice, both of Masontown, Pa.
