Ruth Barnthouse Herod

Ruth Barnthouse Herod, 90, of Point Marion, Pa., passed away Thursday, December 21, 2006, at her home. Born Aug. 16, 1916 in Uniontown, Pa. she was a daughter of the late Quinter and Nora (Collier) Barnthouse. Married for 63 years, Ruth was the loving wife of Richard R. Herod, and dearly loved mother of Richard Herod, II of St. Paul, Minnesota, Linda Ruth Herod of Deltona, Florida, and Joyce Henderson and her husband, Doug, of Bolivar, Pa. and the beloved grandmother of Richard Herod, III, of Woodbury, Minn., Daniel B. Herod and his wife Marlena of Mayville, Wisconsin, and Emily Ruth and Laura Anne Henderson of Bolivar. The oldest of four children, Ruth is preceded in death by her brother Darwin and his wife Pauline, and sister Erma DeBolt and her husband Christy. Her youngest sister, Beulah Ebersole, and husband, Harold, live in Hummelstown, Pa. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, Karen Barnthouse Ruble and husband Sam of Castleton, Va., Scott Barnthouse and wife Patricia of Newark, Delaware, Jeff Ebersole and wife Beth of Akron, Ohio, Bruce Ebersole of York Haven, Pa., Amy Ebersole Langer and husband Brad of Hummelstown, and 12 grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. A 1934 graduate of Uniontown High School, Ruth also attended Juanita College where she received her teaching certification. She taught elementary school in Uniontown and Point Marion. Ruth was a member of the Robinson Street Church of the Brethren in Uniontown. After her marriage in 1943, she became a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Point Marion, the Anti-Can’t Ladies Sunday School Class, the Missionary Society, and was a Bible School teacher for many years. Ruth loved music, singing, and praising her Lord, and directed the children’s and church choirs for over 40 years. She was a member of the Point Marion Progress Club, a former member and Past President of the Point Marion Business and Professional Women’s Club, and was among the first drivers for the Meals on Wheels in Point Marion. Ruth was a compassionate and caring soul, who loved children, especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was known as a gracious, caring person who gave encouragement and hope through kind words and support. Her kitchen calendar was filled with the birthdays and anniversaries of many friends and family. A generous contributor to numerous charities, Ruth was a sweet lady who loved animals and enjoyed flowers. Her sweet, gentle spirit and beautiful smile will long be remembered by her friends and family. Friends will be received in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, on Friday from 7 – 9 p.m., Saturday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m., and on Sunday in the First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 P.M., the hour of service, with Pastor Kathy Griffith officiating. Interment follows in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion.
