Mileva "Mary" Medin

Mileva “Mary” Bozic Medin, age 97, passed away after a lingering illness on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Heritage Manor in Slidell, LA Mileva Medin was proud of her heritage and her Orthodox Christian faith. She loved her Serbian language, folk music, dances, songs, and social outings with friends. Her love of her heritage showed in active involvement in Serbian communities during her years in Pennsylvania. She was a founding member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels, where she held various positions as an officer on the church board, choir, and Circle of Serbian Sisters. She later joined St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in McKeesport. Meliva loved to sing, and she was active in the choirs of both churches. She and her husband were members of the Penn ‘Sembles Tamburitzans, musicians that frequently performed in the Pittsburgh area. After moving to Louisiana in 1996, she attended St. Basil’s Orthodox Church in Metairie. Mileva, or Mary, as she was called by her American friends, was born in Midland, PA on July 21, 1920, a daughter of late Ilja “Eli” and Stanka “Stella” Bozic and step-daughter of Michael Kataran. She is preceded in death by her parents, step-father, husband Vaso Medin in 1995; brothers Dimitri Bozic, Mike Brozik, George Brozik; and sister Mildred “Saya” Woatich. She is survived by her daughter Gloria (Tarasuk) Van Zandt with whom she resided for 20 years in Slidell; grand-daughters Cindy Van Zandt of Dallas TX, Debra Van Zandt of Tulsa OK; son-in-law Robert; nieces Dianna Brozich, Betty Parmer, Nancy Mitchell; nephews Stan Brozik, Ronald Brozik, Mark Brozik, Michael Woatich; and their families. Her extended family includes step-daughter Lee Anne (Medin) Burwell and her husband Louis of Seattle WA, and grand-daughters Nicolette and Bridgette Burwell. Visitation will take place Sunday, June 10, 2018 in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, from 5 - 8:00 PM. A Pomem Service will begin at 7:00 PM, with Father Sasa Nedic officiating. Funeral services to take place at St George Serbian Orthodox Church Carmichaels, PA on Monday, June 11 at 12:00 noon, with an hour of visitation from 11:00 AM until the funeral service. Interment follows in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 296 Old Route 21, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
