Gordon W. Miller

Gordon Wayne Miller, 94, a former longtime resident of Dilliner (Newtown), Pa., died Sunday, July 11, 2010, in Garland, Texas. Born March 27, 1916 on Rich Mountain in Boone, North Carolina, he was the oldest son of nine children born to Alfred and Josie Miller. On June 4, 1938, he married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Lewis. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII on board the USS Wilkes-Barre in the Pacific, he returned to the states and moved his wife and son Fred to Dilliner. He spent 37 years working in area coal mines, until his retirement in 1978. While in Dilliner, he built a home for his growing family where he lived until 2007, when he moved to Texas to live with his son David, and his family. Gordon began attending the Radio Church of God in January of 1964, and was baptized later that year. He was ordained a deacon in May of 1975, and continued to serve in that capacity for many years, until failing health forced him to stop serving, but he never stopped his giving attitude. He attended the Feast in many locations, starting in Jekyll Island, and including Jerusalem, Anchorage, Alaska, and Mt. Pocono, among others. An avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors, Gordon also enjoyed playing softball, which he did on the local church team well onto his sixties. He was dearly loved by his family and friends, and will be greatly missed. Surviving are two sons, Bill Miller of Mars, Pa., David Miller of Garland, Texas; five grandchildren, Mark Wayne, Mark Edward, Judy, Laniece, and Cathy; a great-grandson, Shawn; a brother, Ralph; and sister, Louise. Deceased is his wife of 63 years, Helen Lewis Miller, who died on June 21, 2001; two children, Fred Miller, and a child in infancy; a grandson, David Wayne Miller; three brothers and three sisters. Friends will be received in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, Pa., on Wednesday from 6 – 8 p.m., and Thursday until 2:00 p.m., the hour of service, with Pastor Tom Smith officiating. Interment follows in Wolf’s Cemetery, with military rites accorded at the graveside by the Point Marion Veterans Posts.
